Gumline Cavities: How are they different?
How does a gumline cavity develop? How to treat a gumline cavity
Gumline cavities are just what they sound like, instead of a developing between teeth or in the pit of a molar, they are cavities on the side of the tooth, where the tooth meets the gums. Gumline cavities are also associated with exposed tooth roots. This happens because the gum tissue that usually protects the roots has receded due to gum disease and leaves the roots exposed and vulnerable to decay as well as pain.
How does a gumline cavity develop?
Just like other cavities, gum cavities form when bacteria and plaque build up in the mouth. The acid from this bacteria breaks down the tooth enamel and creates a hole. Just like how the pits and fissures of the molars are hot spots for food, bacteria, and plaque to get stuck so are the areas right along the gumline. The root surface (cementum) is softer than enamel, so it will decay easier if exposed to plaque. That’s why it’s so important to remember to brush and floss regularly to remove this buildup from these areas before it turns into tooth decay.
How to treat a gumline cavity
Cavities have to be filled by a dentist or it could lead to more serious problems like gum and tooth abscesses caused by infection. However, you can do plenty to prevent cavities from forming. The best way to do that is to brush twice a day, floss once a day, and visit a dental professional two times a year. Remember that the root surface covering is softer than enamel, so do not use a scrubbing motion when brushing or you will wear the cementum away resulting in sensitive teeth. Also, remember that whenever you’re experiencing tooth pain to get a professional opinion because it can stop tooth decay before it develops into cavities and long-term dental issues.
